The most significant cultural difference that Greeks perceived between themselves and the "others" was verified in the , literally, "the life of the ". In Euripides' Hippolytus , the tragic hero chooses to be outside family norms and political responsibilities of the civilized life, beginning a marginal relationship with the . As virgin and hunter he is uncivil. The present paper intends to observe Hippolytus' tragic itinerary, in his desire of remaining in the Artemis' world without passing through the frontier that separates civilization from savagery, sameness from otherness, in order to reconstruct and interpret the civic speech that sustains the tragedy.
