NAPOLI, Juan Tobías. Espacio teatral y espacio sagrado: Bacantes de Eurípides. Synthesis (La Plata) [online]. 2005, vol.12, pp.19-36. ISSN 0328-1205.

In Bacchae 815, Dionysus tries to persuade Pentheus to go to the mount to observe some of the aspects of the dionysiac cult in the Theban maenads. By doing that, the god places the spectators of the tragedy as witnesses of a feeling that exemplifies, in Pentheus, what has been called the tragic paradox: the fact that the spectator takes pleasure in contemplating suffering. In this particular case, it is Pentheus, spectator of the human tragedy performed by the maenads on the mount, who will take pleasure in this spectacle. Pentheus' feelings, when faced with this performance, mirror the feelings expected from the actual spectators of the whole tragedy. Our claim is that, in the last years of his theatrical career, the poet would have proposed, in Bacchae, a reflection on the theatrical phenomenon. In order to support this claim, we will analyse the values of all the different spaces in which the plot of each one of the dramatic actions is developed.
