In his Memorabilia, Xenophon transcribes two conversations held by Socrates with a painter and a sculptor. This paper analizes the sense of two words which appear along the dialogues and are fundamental to the greek art theory: ethos and pathos. Both allude to certain expressive traits that can be represented in paintint and sculpture. As concepts applicable to plastic arts, the term ethos refers to inherent traits of character and pathos to external and circumstantial characteristics. One of the most interesting points in Xenophon's text is that the notion of mimesis is applied to painting and sculpture as a basic and established feature. The concept of mimesis in the sense of "imitation" appears for the first time as a prevailing aesthetic cathegory.
