Abstract

ZAMAR, María I.  and  NEDER DE ROMAN, Lilia E.. First record of Scopaeothrips bicolor (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) from South America, with descriptions of a new apterous form and the larva II. Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent. [online]. 2006, vol.65, n.1-2, pp.101-106. ISSN 0373-5680.

The genus Scopaeothrips Hood, 1912 includes two species, S. unicolor Hood, 1912 and S. bicolor (Hood, 1912). To date, S. bicolor has been only recorded from Mexico , Texas , California , and Arizona . It has been regarded as a damaging species to Opuntia Mill. crops and described on the basis of macropterous and brachypterous female and brachypterous male specimens. The present study describes the apterous forms and larva II of this species. Specimens were collected on flowers of Opuntia soehrensii Britton & Rose (wild cacti) in locations situated between 2049 m asl and 2849 m asl, in Jujuy province. The present study constitutes the first record of S. bicolor for South America and it defines the variation in the development of wings as an important contribution to the generic diagnosis.

Keywords : Thysanoptera; Scopaeothrips bicolor; Morphology; Apterous adults; Larva II.
