Abstract

The decomposition process and the composition of insects using biomodels of pigs were studied in the NE of Chubut province. The objective was to determine the species composition, abundance and richness of carrion arthropod fauna in the steppe environment. Seasonal surveys were performed for three consecutive years. Three domestic pigs were placed in wood cages with wire mesh in each experiment. Samples of arthropods from under, around and inside the corpse, were collected daily. We registered 36.157 individuals belonging to 78 species of 18 families distributed among the Diptera, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera orders. Three species of Calliphoridae are cited for the first time from Chubut: Paralucilia pseudolyrcea Mello, Paralucilia fulvinota Bigot and Chrysomya albiceps Wiedemann; and one species of Muscidae: Arthurella choelensis Patitucci & Mariluis. Sarcophaga (Lipoptilocnema) margaretae Lahille (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is newly cited for the cadaveric fauna of Argentina. This is the first forensic entomology study carried out in Patagonia that allows to identify the decomposition processes and cadaveric fauna in this area. Therefore, it provides relevant information that can be used to solve human forensic cases in the region.
