Through the diverse and little known documentation of David Peña´s (1862-1930) personal archives, this paper seeks to shed new light on his book Juan Facundo Quiroga (1906). For this purpose, it seeks to link this work -one of the first in Argentina which wanted to initiate the historical reappraisal of the caudillos-, with the personal letters and several author´s manuscripts, as well as other publications from the same period, in order to move ahead in building a history of historiography not only concerned about a work´s internal analysis, but also particularly attentive to its contexts of production, links and influences between historians, and the expected or achieved public reception of their work.
