Abstract

TCHERBBIS TESTA, Jimena. Imaginar un nuevo orden político: la crítica liberal a la Inquisición española en la prensa de Lima y Buenos Aires durante las Cortes de Cádiz (1810-1814). Bol. Inst. Hist. Argent. Am. Dr. Emilio Ravignani [online]. 2019, n.50, pp.52-97. ISSN 0524-9767.

During the Spanish Monarchy´s crisis, one of the most interesting debates about the relation between politics and religion took place. We are referring to the debate about the abolition of the Spanish Inquisition. The controversy stimulated the reflection on the problem of the origin and legitimation of authority, obedience, censorship and the power to punish. The key of the dilemma was the right to imagine a new political order. In this paper, we aim to reconstruct that debate, which has developed in the press of Lima and Buenos Aires during the period when the Cadiz Courts were gathered (1810-1814). By doing such analysis, we attempt to overcome the peninsular perspective of mainstream historiography and to analyze, in a comparative way, to what extent the criticism against the Inquisition gave place to the claiming of new rights and to the construction of new projects and political identities.

Keywords : Spanish Inquisition; Cadiz Courts; Liberalism; Lima; Buenos Aires; Journalism.
