Abstract

Clothing industry has shown erratic behavior in recent decades, characterized by a sharp reduction from the nineties and a subsequent intensive growth that followed the economic recovery after the 2001 Economic Crisis. These trends imply radical changes both in the production process and in the working conditions. In this paper we analyze the factors that affect the fluctuations in garment industry and the main results for workers of the sector. Fundamentally, the growth of the extremely precarious employment of unregistered immigrants, recruited through networks of human trafficking. It also outlines the institutional intervention -of both union and government- analyzing their strengths and limitations for the eradication of this form of labor exploitation.
