Through the study of the Cárcel de Mujeres y Asilo de Menores del Buen Pastor, this article seeks to delineate some of the characteristics of the configuration of female punishment and to establish its relationship with the labor market that was configured for women in Cordoba in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. To this end, we will focus on certain aspects of the institutional routine of the prison and asylum, such as the instruction and labor training and the teaching of basic principles for the management of a house, as content of the education that was imparted there; correction strategies designed by the nuns, with a strong anchorage in the discourse of domesticity. Understanding the institution as part of a broader mechanism of control over the subaltern sectors and the female labor force, we will see how a female correctional project is articulated with the purpose of correcting and punishing the behavior of some women, while at the same time training labor for domestic service. This is materialized through the device of placement, which assumes a certain centrality not only as a mechanism of exit from the institution, being frequently used to give exit to many women and minors; but also as a reason for admission and/or deposit, either the reentry of women placed by the institution, or the referral of many others with the purpose of finding them placement.
