REBATO, Esther  e  MUNOZ-CACHON, María J. Influencia Del Estatus Socioeconómico (Ses) Sobre La Variabilidad Antropométrica En Estudiantes Universitarios Del País Vasco (España). Rev Arg Antrop Biol [online]. 2016, vol.18, n.1. ISSN 1514-7991.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17139/raab.2016.0018.01.02.

Studies on the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on body dimensions have an extensive scientific tradition, since their variability and evolution are a reflection of population welfare. The aim of this work is to study the-effect of socioeconomic status (SES) on several anthropo-metric traits describing size, shape, and body composition, in a sample of 1105college students of both sexes (18-33 years old) living in the Basque Country. Socioeconomic status (SES) of each individual was estimated from their parents' profession and educational level, and its influence on anthropometric dimensions was analyzed with multivariate methodology. SES significantly influenced height (in particular the father profession) and hip circumference in both sexes. In males, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (%BF), and endomorphy were also influenced by SES. In general, individuals of higher socioeconomic status are taller, have lower values of BMI and of adiposity variables, and a more longilinear morphology. The greater sensitivity of male phenotypes in relation to socioeconomic indicators and the low anthropometric variability of women regarding these factors are to be noted.

Palavras-chave : socioeconomic status (SES); anthropological traits; anthropometric somatotype.
