Abstract

GIANNOTTI, Pablo Sebastián. Preliminary results of evaluation of entheseal changes through the Coimbra method in spanish colonial populations of south America: Mendoza city, Argentina (XVII-XIX centuries). Rev Arg Antrop Biol [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.1, pp.5-6. ISSN 1514-7991.  http://dx.doi.org/10.24215/18536387e011.

The aim of this paper is to present the preliminary results of an evaluation of enthesial changes in urban populations of the city of Mendoza (Argentina) of the colonial period (17th to 19th centuries). The bioarchaeological sample corresponds to 67 adult individuals of both sexes exhumed in archaeological excavations of catholic temples of the site Área Fundacional (City of Mendoza) between 1995 and 2012. The degree of intraobserver error was evaluated and the distribution by sex and age groups was analyzed from the record of 26 fibrocartilaginous enthesis. The prevalence was calculated from the absolute and relative frequencies according to the presence/absence and the degrees of expression by feature, together with the test of statistical significance. The results suggest different biomechanical demand patterns between men and women at different ages (prevalence and duration/intensity of activities). However, the distribution is discussed considering biological and methodological factors, proposing lines of investigation to be developed to functional stress studies in historical colonial populations of Mendoza.
