Resumen

NICOLA, Luciana. The migration on the domestic unit: a case study in two municipalities of the Argentine-Bolivian's border (Los Toldos, Salta and Padcaya, Tarija). Mundo agr. [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.17, pp.00-00. ISSN 1515-5994.

This paper studies regional and international migration in a context of peasant economies, in the border between actual municipalities of Los Toldos (Salta, Argentina) and Padcaya (Tarija, Bolivia). It was not until 1938 that Los Toldos valley was officially transferred from Bolivia to the argentine province of Salta. From that date on, the state influences have introduced divergences between both sectors, mostly due to the differential politics that both nations have been adopting. The ethnographic study and, particularly, the comparative analysis of 110 semi-structured surveys, which allow studying the household's members' dynamics, permits us conclude that the different types of migration are structured owing to reproductive strategies of the household. Permanent migration is thought as a compensatory mechanism for the redistribution of productive resources between sons, as the land subdivision is a problem nowadays, while temporary migrations are thought as another economic activity among the already conventional productive ones in the region.

Palabras clave : Argentina and Bolivia border; semi-structured surveys; types of migration; households; reproductive strategy; socioeconomic strategy.
