Abstract

GELMAN, Jorge  and  SANTILLI, Daniel. The Paradoxes of Freedom: Independence and Inequality in the Río de la Plata. Mundo agrar. [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.35, pp.00-00. ISSN 1515-5994.

This paper brings forth the main results of our research from the last few years regarding the economic processes in Buenos Aires and the Río de la Plata region altogether following the Independence. On the one hand, it compares the different regional economies, underscoring their unequal performance; while on the other hand it pays special attention to the evolution of inequality amongst the people and social groups in the Buenos Aires province from the end of the colony to the second half of the 19th century, with an overall growing inequality. Hence, in terms of wealth and income distribution, the results of the Independence were unfavorable for the poorest.

Keywords : Buenos Aires; Inequality; Economy; Regions; Land.
