Abstract

FIGURELLI, Mónica Fernanda. Food, Life and Nature: The Construction of Peasant by Agrarian Popular Movements. Mundo agrar. [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.36, pp.00-00. ISSN 1515-5994.

This article is based on fieldwork in Brazil and Argentina with social movements linked to La Vía Campesina. I reflect on the “peasant” category that such movements emphasize. I do not see the peasant as a social type, neither I am looking for a substantive definition of it. Unlike this, I consider “peasantry” as a form of identity of the persons, and I take into account the constitutive oppositions that allow the creation of that identity. The article shows that the construction of the "peasant" responds to the different relationships that the members of the movements weave in their political practice

Keywords : Peasant; Identity; Constitutive relationships; Peasant movements.
