Resumen

FERNANDEZ LAMARRA, Norberto  y  MARQUINA, Monica. The Academic Profession in Latin America: Current trends from a comparative study. Espac. blanco, Ser. indagaciones [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.1. ISSN 1515-9485.

The study of the academic profession in Latin America requires consideration of the contexts, policies and current problems of higher education in the region and its evolution in the last decades. In this framework, the paper proposes to characterize the academic profession of three Latin American countries: Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. The three countries changed their rules from a common reform agenda that took place during the 90s, which included privatization, diversification, evaluation and new financing policies. Based on the data from the international CAP survey, the paper analyzes the academic profession considering both the objective aspects (training, working conditions, use of time, etc.) as perceptions of these actors on these conditions (preferences, satisfaction, trajectories). We conclude that the academic profession in the region reflects the impact of recent policies of higher education and, in that context, despite scholars of the countries surveyed feel that their conditions have improved showing acceptable levels of satisfaction with the work they do, challenges to the institutional and national decision - making levels appear.
