This paper describes, from the point of view of Spanish history of education, the presence that play activity and toys have had in the last and a half century's pedagogy. The large amount of documents consulted, dealing with the use, consideration and pedagogical potentialities of play in education, enable us to better understand the origins and development of contemporary playful and pedagogical thinking until its consolidation in the collective social imaginary of current educators. With this aim, the main aspects studied are the play pedagogical qualities and their didactic possibilities, the industrial production of educative toys, as well as the presence that the play activity has had in Spanish schools and its connection with the pedagogical renewal.
