Abstract

PIERELLA, María Paula. The First Year at University from Professors' Perspectives. Policies of Reception, Teaching and Curriculum. Espac. blanco, Ser. indagaciones [online]. 2018, vol.28, n.2, pp.33-48. ISSN 1515-9485.

First year at university is a critical period, which influences significantly students’ academic paths. Considering  that first-year professors are main actors in the process of receiving the incoming students, this article proposes an approach to a series of dimensions involved in the teaching activity at this cycle. Specifically, the paper aims to explain two different but interrelated aspects: professors' perceptions of incoming students  and  some  tensions identified in the curriculum sphere. All  these issues are intertwined by the work condition, in the complex network in which structural elements and subjective aspects interact. Empirical evidence was obtained from the analysis of narrative interviews to first year professors from a local Public University (Universidad Nacional de Rosario). It is posed as a challenge the need to increase the research on teaching in first year as an activity that has specific characteristics and problems.

Keywords : First Year at University; incoming students; professors; teaching; curriculum..
