Resumen

FERNANDEZ FASTUCA, Lorena. Thesis supervision styles in doctoral programs in Social and Biological Sciences. Espac. blanco, Ser. indagaciones [online]. 2019, vol.29, n.2, pp.1-10. ISSN 1515-9485.

The literature on thesis supervision and its possible styles has centered on the dichotomy too much presence - total absence. Here we propose to overcome this dichotomy and analyze the possible supervision styles according to the degree of pedagogical involvement of the supervisor. For this aim, interviews were conducted with 20 pairs of supervisor-student, of the doctoral programs in Social Sciences and Biological Sciences of the same Argentine university. Three management styles were identified: companion, guidance and directive. In the first the supervisors are considered special readers of the student’s thesis. In the guiding style the supervisor's task is to guide the student, recognizing him as the protagonist of his work, providing the necessary tools. Finally, in the last style the supervisor shares the leading role in the formative process of the student. Each of them offers differential learning opportunities, enabling different training processes for their students.
