Abstract

BOUFLEUER, José Pedro. The specificity of school education in republican and democratic societies. Espac. blanco, Ser. indagaciones [online]. 2019, vol.29, n.2, pp.1-10. ISSN 1515-9485.

Understanding education as a living dialogue between generations, reflection establishes approximations between school education and the maintenance of civilizational      achievements,      among      which, democracy. In the wake of modern republican revolutions, new forms of government are based on universal citizenship and on the principle that it is always reasonable to share responsibility for choices with everyone involved. The challenge, then, is to qualify the opinions of all, with the view that the general understanding can be as qualified as possible. And that is where the task of the school as a producer of belonging to the new forms of life enters. Its specificity reveals itself, especially in the nature of the knowledge it conveys. In this sense, the notion of an expanded rationality, oriented to the construction of intersubjective understandings, offers the horizon that allows to distinguish the type of knowledge that is to be ministered in the schools.
