In the context of the problem about the conditions that ensure the intersubjective validity of our thinking, it is of central importance to clarify the role and the scope of the hypothetical or abstract ‘anticipation’ of the other’s claims. This is the issue at stake in the debate on the criteria that underpin a practical rationality which starts from the interaction in everyday language. In order to shed light on this issue, we will start from Bakhtin’s claim that our utterances have an inescapable dialogic character, that is, they keep an inevitable connection with the statements of others, existing or presupposed. This paper aims to do a first approximation between Bakhtin’s position and Gadamer’s hermeneutics. Scrutinizing the relationship between the author-recipient dialectics and the abstract anticipation of the other, we think we can clarify the way of relation with the alien statement that befits intersubjective validity
