This paper aims to read the autobiographical work of Rousseau as the outcome of a dispute between the writer and the public. Both parts dispute the author's identity. We will see that the autobiographical project starts as the claim of sovereignty of the work by the author, but culminates by establishing the sovereignty of the reader. In the autobiographical writings, the author is an effect of the reading.
