Abstract

TONNI, Eduardo P; PASQUALI, Ricardo C  and  LAZA, José H. Auguste Bravard and their contribution to the development of the earth sciences in the Argentina. Ser. correl. geol. [online]. 2008, n.24, pp.63-70. ISSN 1666-9479.

Probably in 1853 arrives to the Argentina the French engineer Pierre Joseph Auguste Bravard. In 1857 it is hired by Urquiza like director of the Museo de la Confederación, and in charge to relieve of the mineral resources of the country. In spite of the brief lapse in that Bravard worked in Argentina, and the consequently scarce published work, its contribution to the sciences of the Earth is very significant. Their geologic contributions are strongly influenced by the principles of the actualism and uniformitarism, principles that he uses to interpret the formation of the paleontological sites, introducing concepts that modernly belong to the field of the taphonomy. Although it was not a paleontologist, because their contributions to the discipline didn't pass of mere enunciative lists, it used to the fossils with stratigraphic meaning, in a similar way to the current biostratigraphical practices. Their topographical and geologic map is the first of this type in the Argentina.

Keywords : Argentina; Bravard; Biostratigraphy; Stratigraphy; Pampean formation; Taphonomy.
