Abstract

In this contribution we analyze the small mammals associations recovered from the archaeological site El Shincal de Quimivil, Catamarca Province, Argentina. The sample represents three occupation times between the XIV and XVII centuries. High frequencies of vertebral elements and isolated incisors as well as the absence of clear signs of dissolution on bones and teeth suggest that the association would not be the product of the trophic activities of predators but it would be related to eto-ecological attributes of the recorded species. The sample, dominated by the cricetid Calomys cf. C. musculinus, is also composed by one didelphimorphian (Thylamys cf. T. pallidior), three sigmodontine rodents (Akodon cf. A. dolores, Graomys griseofavus, and Phyllotis xanthopygus), and two species of caviomorph rodents (Ctenomys sp., and Microcavia australis). The quantitative and qualitative taxonomic composition of the historical sample, with the dominance of Calomys cf., C. musculinus respect to the other small mammals, indicates differences respect to the environment naturally developed in this area, probably related to the establishment of incipient agroecosystems. The absence of Eligmodontia, a genus whose species inhabit arid environments with sparse vegetation and bare sandy or stony soils, could be vinculated with more humid local conditions and the irrigation practices by human populations. The poor knowledge of prehispanic, historical, and present small mammal associations in this area of Monte ecoregion, prevents an adequate comparison of the studied sample and the construction of an environmental scheme from the archaeofaunistic record. The particularly humid microenvironment by the establishment of agricultural practices constitutes an additional factor that makes the comparison with additional samples coming from nearby areas very difficult.
