[online]. 2015, vol.31, n.1. ISSN 1666-9479.

The sedimentology of the Santa Rosita Formation (late Furongian-Tremadocian) in the Nazareno area, Cordillera Oriental, Salta Province, is studied herein. In this locality, a 650m thick succession is assignable to the upper part of the formation, and consists of a lower part dominated by sandstones and an upper part characteri-zed mainly by shales. The studied section includes several sedimentary facies (A: Laminated and massive black shale; B: Green and dark gray siltstones with intercalations of thin sandstone beds; C: Massive mudstone with intercalated com-bined-fow rippled sandstone; D: Interbedded hummocky cross-stratifed sandstone and mudstone; E: Amalgamated sandstone with hummocky cross-stratiation overlapping), which characterize different open marine environments do-minated by storms. The succession evolves from lower middle shoreface to distal offshore zones. The upper part of the sequence documents a transgressive event of broad signiance in the upper Tremadocian of northwestern Argentina.
