Abstract

QUESADA, Marcos N.  and  LEMA, Carolina. The Potreros of Antofagasta: Indian Labor and Property (Late Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Centuries. Andes [online]. 2011, vol.22, n.2. ISSN 1668-8090.

In this paper we explain the way in which the indigenous peasants from the Southern Puna organized the labor, accordingly to a local logic, around the agricultural production that allowed their social reproduction and articulation to the regional economy towards the end of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century. The combined use of historical and archaeological methodologies and techniques allowed us to create an alternative perspective about the local forms of agricultural production, emphasizing the labor processes and land appropriation mechanisms that otherwise  remained invisible.

Keywords : Southern Puna; Potreros; Andean peasants; Vega agriculture.
