This article revisits the Indian family during the first centuries of colonial domination in a section of the territories under jurisdiction of the Audiencia of Charcas-the village of Tarija and the Western valleys south of it. The family configuration of the Indians -most of them registered as yanaconas in farms and haciendas- is examined on the basis of two 17th-century General Inspections (visitas). Both demographic sources present population organized into census units which do not directly match family units since they were created and recorded by the Spanish inspectors, which often break them. We propose a careful reading and an analysis of the data provided by the inspections taking into consideration the dynamic population history in that region and going beyond the gaps in the sources in search of the characteristics of the social groups that favoured Indian reproduction.
