Resumen

AGUERREGARAY CASTIGLIONE, Rosana. Dispute and tension around the administration of funeral practices at the end of nineteenth century, Mendoza, Argentina. Andes [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

This paper explores the tensions between Mendoza state actors and the diocese raised from the sanction of a set of regulations that sought to control and regulate certain spaces and funeral practices.. In the late nineteenth century, the State of the Mendoza province, in line with a modern structure, began to intervene on institutions and perform functions that had been in the hands of different actors from the ecclesiastical sphere, what generated certain quarrels among the various agents disputing the management of death. Thus, it is observed that as the civil power was consolidating in its structures and devices, the process of secularization of death advanced especially in those sites linked to the public space, while the Catholic death was situated in the private scope, confined to an almost intimate sphere. In order to carry out this work, we analyze -from a historical and cultural perspective- a series of ordinances, regulations and state-laws, as well as documents and newspaper reports from that time.

Palabras clave : Death; Quarrels; Mendoza; Catholicism; Secularity.
