From the perspective of frontier studies and based on the concept of frontier complex proposed by Guillaume Boccara, this paper aims to analyze a conflict developed between Córdoba and Santa Fe (actual Argentina) in the mid-18th century. This conflict, which was placed in a bigger context of interjurisdictional disputes between both cities, was triggered by the different inter-ethnic policies carried out by the two cities as the violence was increased in the frontiers of the Chaco region, and the consequences that the peace pacts between Santa Fe and the Indian leaders caused on Cordoba’s frontiers. In this respect, we seek to account the different aspects of the conflict, attending to the different social and individual actors involved, focusing on the Hispanic authorities, but also paying attention to the motivations of indigenous leaders and the actions of the Jesuit fathers.
