Abstract

SEIBOLD, Katharine. Woven prayers: q'epi cloths and the august first payment to the earth mother. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2001, n.17, pp.445-454. ISSN 1668-8104.

In this examination of the social semiotics of the ritual and the woven cloth used in the August first payment to the Earth Mother, based on fifteen months of participant-observation fieldwork and in-depth interviews in Choquecancha, Cuzco, Peru, a new model of dualism is advanced: the dialectic of dualism, in which opposing ends are interrelated and interdependent to form a whole, and which is found to resonate throughout the social, political, economic, cosmological and aesthetic culture of the Runakuna, as for example in the relationships of qhari-warmi, the living landscape, and which continue from pre-Colombian funerary bundles.
