Resumen

ENDERE, María Luz. Archaeology, politics and globalization: who is a accountable of its patrimoy?. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2002, n.18, pp.69-76. ISSN 1668-8104.

The protection of archaeological resources in Argentina is based on a national heritage system, which is in the Federal State custody. Even when this system has never demonstrated to be efficient, the situation is more critical at present, because it seems to be unable to cope with the current challenges. Meanwhile National State does not assume the role and the responsibilities related to cultural heritage given by the National Constitution, the discussion and the adoption of heritage management policies have become a matter of macro-regional (e.g. MERCOSUR) and international concern. On the other hand, local governments and people are getting involved in preserving heritage and indigenous communities are starting to claim their participation in the management of their cultural heritage, mainly the human remains of their ancestors. Local and international heritage management, indigenous claims, mass consumption of archaeological resources and privatisation of cultural places are issues almost unknown in Argentina until recently. However, they are now challenging the main bases of the heritage protection system in the country. In this context, the aim of this paper is to analyse the new scenario of heritage preservation in Argentina and to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the current system as well as the threats and opportunities that the new "global" reality can offer for the near future.
