This paper takes into consideration Jujuy´s public and private document files from its foundation to the present. Firstly we will refer to the historical comings an goings leading to the dispersion or disappearance of documents belonging to the present-day province of Jujuy from early times to these days. Secondly, we wil analyse the legislation pertaining provincial Public Documents Files (1) and the political tendencies revealed in such legislation about the whereabouts and importance of the document sources. Thereafter, we will proceed to consider private document files existing in the province and the necessity of their cataloguing in order to appraise such documentation so that researchers and public in general could access them as valuable elements of co-operation in their approach to Jujuy´s history. Finally we will formulate some considerations about the importance granted to document files and his public records offices by the province and society as a whole, not only as heritage to be safeguarded but fundamentally as a "future memory", which should be regarded as an invaluable resort for the reconstruction of our history - not the history woven by suspicious readings - but also as an approach to reality which will contribute to a new formulation of our identity as a result of our past.
