DIPIERRI, José E.. Impact and integration between alternative medicine (am) and conventional medicine (cm). Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2004, n.22, pp.241-263. ISSN 1668-8104.

Introduction: It has been verified a growing insatisfaction regarding conventional medicine (CM), this determines a greater use of some kind of alternative and / or complementary (ACM) methods of by some patients. The objective of this work has been to evaluate the impact and integration between ACM and CM studying medical behaviour as regards ACM and the magnitud of ACM dominant medical bibliography. Materials and Methods: To evaluate medical behaviour a meta analysis of 17 relevant surveys on the topic was carried out. Bibliometric methodology to estimate the magnitud of ACM bibliography was utilized, this bibliometric methodology was classified according to the MESH thesaurus, in the entire MEDLINE base in the years 1985 to 1999. Result: Out of 5577 subject interviewed the percentage of answers was 65.8% verifying that in four surveys 57% of the medical doctors use some kind of ACM. Considering 13 surveys 62.5% of medical doctors had derived patients, in other 7 surveys 7% practiced ACM and in other 3 surveys 26.5% of medical doctors had been trained in some form of ACM. ACM cites approximately represent 0,42% of the MEDLINE base, it has been observed an increase of ACM publications between 1985 to 1999. Discussions and conclusions: According to the results impact and integration of ACM in CM, this is so because of medical doctors generally positive attitude as regards these practices as well as an increase in the number of publications on these topics mentioned in data base MEDLINE. Different aspects of this integration are discussed and an agenda of topics to be examined is proposed to favour it.
