VARGAS, Alejandra García. 'Ghost's chronicles' San Salvador de Jujuy's local newspapers and urban imaginaries. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2004, n.24, pp.123-144. ISSN 1668-8104.
Searching for the senses that acquires urban identities in Jujuy's press, as the result of the struggle among the discourses,, we collected journalistic articles appeared in "Crónica" and "El día" during the period 1943-1945. In these texts, we looked for the discursive formations about the city and its actors' and spaces' differential valoration. These newspaper's chronicles conformed a possible way to put order to a world in transformation (the city's small and dairy world), in a moment when the suitable cathegories weren't enough. Looking for new demarcations, "Crónica" and "El Día" used the ethnicity in colonial, racial or romantic key, the authority of the national capital as measurement of the taste, the hispanistic discourse as reinsurance of the harmony in danger, the gender as a frontier between public space and private world, the tourism as a new and important actor for projects, the spaces' differential administration like a possibility for order's restitution. These newspapers say that San Salvador de Jujuy is a city, that needs space and modernity, and also that is necessary to remember the past. None of these terms is unequivocal. The city is built by opposition to other ones (to some of them) and to the nature (that is also a special nature). By the way, the space and the modernity are gestionated in projects that ties them to a history tradition that gives rights just to some habitants.
