Abstract

BUGALLO, Lucila. Quipildores. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2009, n.36, pp.177-202. ISSN 1668-8104.

This paper presents different aspects related to the thunderbolt and associated rituals in the Jujuy Puna, in Argentina, drawing on data collected from early 20th century documents and contemporary ethnography. This study reflects on the new conception of thunderbolts that appeared in the colonial period relating them with Saint James. It shows the relation between thunderbolts and production, analysing the offerings made through rituals, the ways the Puna landscape is signalled by marks related to production and the sacred, and the relation between thunderbolts and the name/surname Quipildor. The material presented and analysed in this study allows us to reflect on the conceptions and practices concerning space, nature and divinities in the Jujuy Puna region.

Keywords : Offerings to thunderbolts; Quipildor; Thunderbolts; Saint James; Jujuy's Puna.
