The existence of critical poverty levels in many neighborhoods of the Greater San Miguel de Tucumán expresses the extension and intensity of this problem in this city, and somehow it also shows the deep social deterioration that took place within the most recent decades. The prevailing conditions in the labor market would explain in a great measure the difficulties suffered by the households in order to exceed the privation levels.             In this context, an outlying neighborhood of the city was chosen, named Costanera Norte, characterized by a high incidence and intensity of poverty, in order to analyze, on one side, its population insertion in the labor market and, on the other, the importance and specificity that "cartoneo" has as a prevailing working activity.             For the development of this article, data was used from the 2001 National Population, Household and Housing Census, as well as results from semi-structured interviews carried out in 2011 to certain families from the neighborhood regarding dwelling and socio-economical conditions.             The results allow for detecting the relation between the persistence of poverty and "cartoneo" as an inter-generational working activity, carried out by most households in the neighborhood. This activity only allows for keeping subsistence levels.
