The identity is one of the topics of most interest to contemporary social sciences. Thus, taking into account the disagreements related to its conceptualization, this article addresses some key topics and clarifies its methodological implications. Simultaneously, some original contributions, supported by a case study performed in the northeast of Argentina on peasants' identity, are developed.             This paper highlights, as conclusions of this study, that the self of the people have many dimensions which are contextually activated, that it is crucial to investigate the processes of appropriation and resistance to stigmatized identities externally proposed, and that the people's self-presentations in everyday life have pragmatic motivations that should be studied and taken into account
