The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the Saussurean notion of linguistic sign, based on the association between signifier and signified. Such reflection has been enhanced by the discovery of Saussure's manuscripts in his family home in Geneva in 1996.           It is interesting to re-discuss the double conceptualizations as regards the sign. On the one hand, it is considered as a closed unit in the Course of General Linguistics, but the negativity that is at the basis of the relations between signifiers and meanings enables a principle of contextuality that has been emphasized by François Rastier. On the other hand, the linguistic sign is the result of a process of abstraction and decontextualization that cuts it off from its material base. However, prosody, voice and sounds impose themselves and shape the meaning in a communicative situation
