The present article corresponds to an extension of a Master´s thesis of own authorship dedicated to the study of the body and violence in the work of Hannah Arendt. It is in this context that the attempt to trace a possible concept of violence that operates as a starting point evidenced numerous debates around its characterization. Far from arriving at an accurate reading, the persistence of disagreements and arbitrariness expand the interpretive range to the point where there is a constant redefinition of the term. This indiscriminate appropriation generates a theoretical vacuum around the violence that is completed with the particular needs of each disciplinary. Assuming a historical-hermeneutic position, the objective of the article consists in the reconstruction of some of the most relevant debates regarding the definition of violence in Human Sciences (with particular attention to education area). The methodology is based on etymological reconstructions and reviews of primary and secondary sources pertinent to the subject matter.
