Resumen

VAQUER, José María  y  CAMERA, Yamila. Karina Menacho`s ceramic analysis methodology and its application in two study cases: Cruz Vinto (North of Lipez, Bolivia) and Casas Quemadas (Rinconada, Jujuy). Scopes and limitations. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2019, n.56, pp.297-321. ISSN 1668-8104.

In this paper we discuss the scopes and limitations of the ceramic analysis methodology developed by Karina Menacho through the characterization and comparison of two ceramic sets. The first one comes from Cruz Vinto, a pukara of the Late Regional Development Period (1200-1450 AD) in Northern Lípez, Bolivia; the second one comes from Casas Quemadas, an agricultural production site in Cusi Cusi, Argentina with occupations of the end of the Inka and Early Colonial Periods (1450-1660 AD). The material of Cruz Vinto comes from excavations of five enclosures interpreted as outdoor activity areas, while the ceramic set of Casas Quemadas comes from a domestic enclosure. We propose that to take full advantage of the methodology it is necessary to have a series of controls on the state of integrity and fragmentation of the sample; as well as the differences between the ethnographic contexts from which the functional categories are taken and the archaeological contexts where they are applied. We maintain that once these controls are considered, the methodology developed by Karina is a powerful tool for the appraisal of ceramic assemblies’ functionality and to relate them to the structure of the activities in the past
