Argentina has ideal agro-ecological and sanitary conditions for pig breeding. Until 1990, porcine production was carried out as a secondary activity within the agricultural fields. However, in 2005 the number of pigs began to increase and reached 3 million heads. Currently the porcine stock in Argentina is represented by 4.9 million heads. In addition to being important from a productive point of view, the porcine species are also essential biological models for different types of biomedical research and as potential donor of organs for humans. The combined interest in porcine biotechnology, both in the biomedical field and in the pig industry, increases the need for further development of new technologies as well as an increase in the improvement and implementation of the already existing ones. The objective of this work is to make a review of the main in vitro reproductive biotechnologies applied in pigs, as well as of the new gene editing tools, which can be used not only for the production and genetic improvement of this species, but also for researches related to the human disease modeling and xenotransplantation.
