Angora goats, which produce mohair fibres used since ancient times in the manufacture of luxury garments, have spread from the Middle East to several countries including Argentina. In the north of the Patagonia Angoras contribute to the livelihood of a large number of smallholders. A literature review, compilation of testimonies and unpublished information allow us to appreciate the particularities of the origin and history of these goats, as well as to summarize the actions that contributed to its development in the country. In that latter sense, the involvement of the National Institute of Agricultural Research in genetic improvement and extension must be highlighted. Over time organized and empowered smallholders obtained additional support that developed into the so-called Mohair Program, which in turn generated the basis for the enactment of a national Goat Law. Production issues and market outlook of mohair indicates that despite sustained favourable prices for mohair, Angora production faces several challenges to be sustained in time.
