Abstract

BENCHIMOL, Pablo. Structure of the International Monetary System: Rethinking the Current Dynamics based on its Historical Transformations. Enfoques [online]. 2020, vol.32, n.2, pp.25-49. ISSN 1669-2721.

We propose to recapitulate the studies that investigate a fundamental characteristic of contemporary world monetary and financial dynamics: the hierarchy of national currencies. On this basis, we aspire to understand the way in which one of them, the US dollar, fulfills the functions of world money. To this end, we revisit previous historical phases that allow us to put into context the current monetary and financial structure, as well as its main distinguishing features and perspectives.

Keywords : International monetary system; National currency; Money; Global imbalances; Economic theory.
