Public policies to promote "gender equity" within the Mendoza state apparatus since its inception in 1988 have taken a winding path. This agency resulted from the commitments assumed in several international conferences (especially the Third World Conference on Women, Nairobi 1985) and from the initiatives of women who impelled the construction of this space. This article discusses the management of the provincial "women’s area" from 2008 through 2011, when it was once again called "Instituto Provincial de la Mujer". The analysis shows the difficulties encountered when trying to incorporate feminist demands in the state apparatus, the area’s loss of radicalism and content, and the redefinition of its objectives as regards the mitigation of gender inequalities and the abandonment of instances aimed at guaranteeing rights for women.
