In the summer of 1536 the conqueror Diego de Almagro, at that time newly named Governor of New Toledo, entered the Argentinean territory during his journey from Cuzco to Chile. Some documents which date from the XVI century reveal the course followed by Almagro. The way he followed, according to some analysis, was done along the Inka road system which is our object of study. In this work we describe the itinerary followed by Almagro in the area where the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca and La Rioja are nowadays situated. The area which brings about the highest point of controversy when defining Almagro's itinerary is in the province of Salta where the Inca province of Chicuana used to be situated. We are absolutely convinced that the analysis of the Inca roads will contribute substantially from an archeological point of view to historical knowledge taking as a starting point the empirical knowledge of regional geography along which the conqueror passed, the systematic study of the Inka road system and the contrast between this information and the one included in documents dating from the first stage of the Spanish regional history.
