Resumen

COSSE, Isabella. Parents and teenagers at the crossroads of change in the 1960s. Eva Giberti's view. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.2. ISSN 1669-9041.

The 1960s and early 1970s have come to be thought of as a time not only of political utopias but also of revolutions in family, couples and parent-children relationships. This paper explores these revolutions in Argentina through an analysis of the book Adolescencia y educación sexual by Psychologist Eva Giberti, one of the most important figures in the transformation of the paradigm of child and teenage rearing in the sixties. I begin with a study of Eva Giberti's views on the conflicts between parents and children, to then focus on her conceptions regarding the world of teenagers. This analysis, based on the documentary archive of Eva Giberti and on magazine articles of the time, reveals that Giberti ultimately supported traditional gender roles and the basic foundations that underpinned the organization of domestic life, and therefore represented a moderate change in family relations. Her views, nonetheless, transformed a great many aspects, as she also questioned common attitudes that shaped family dynamics, calling for greater tolerance, respect and autonomy for the individual, thus proving quite earthshaking for the time.
