Abstract

BALDINI, Lidia  and  SPROVIERI, Marina. The specificity of ceramics from the Calchaquí Valley (Salta) in the wider context of the santamariano area. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2014, vol.13, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.

Late pottery from the Calchaquí Valley still requires an increase in its analysis and its own characterization as part of the wider spectrum of santamariano ceramics. We present the results of the study of complete vessels from museum and private collections aiming to expand on its variability and specificity. Starting from our previous research, here we add information of the Kipón collection and of an assemblage of urns from different sectors and collections of the valley. This allowed to recognize the variety of calchaquí pottery refining inter-site similarities/differences and to suggest the particularities at a regional and interregional level of one of the distinctive santamariano vessels shapes, the urns for burying children.

Keywords : Calchaquí valley; Late pottery; Regional specificity.
