MERLUZZI, Manfredi. American viceroys in the sixteenth century: between dignity, office and status. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.1, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.
In the debate about the conformation and functioning of the apparatus of the Spanish Monarchy in the sixteenth century, this article examines one of the key pieces of that complex gear: the American viceroys. The Monarchy confered these officers enormous power and assigned them a multitude of functions which, in some cases, caused the viceroys to enter into conflicts with other important actors, such as members of the Audiencias. Consequently, studying the role of the viceroys, as an institution, as an office, as a dignity, as a function or as a simple representative of the king, is a structural element necessary to understand the way of governing the Hispanic Monarchy.
