HARO HIDALGO, Víctor Hugo. African Slavery in Peru: Slave Price 1650 - 1820. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2019, vol.18, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.
The colonization of America was heavily nourished by slave labor, millions of African inhabitants were transferred against their will from Africa to the new world, to occupy essentially agricultural work, but which also included work in other activities such as mining, industry, commerce and domestic service. They were an essential ingredient for the development of the colonies, without their forced participation the colonies could not have developed. In this article, the price of slaves in Peru during the late colonial period, between the years of 1650 to 1820, is presented and reviewed. The review includes the evolution of the price of slave labor, seeking to understand the market labor force and the implications of slavery. The main source of information is the notarial protocols existing in the General Archive of the Nation, from which a sample of 1,738 slave purchase and sale transactions was collected, 221 transactions correspond to the 17th century (1650 to 1699), 1,236 transactions to t he century XVIII (1700 to 1799) and 281 transactions for the XIX century (1800 to 1820).Not only is the price of the transaction presented, but other highly interesting data such as the sex, age and caste of the slaves, and the sex of the buyers and sellers have also been considered.
