Resumen

RAMIREZ ESPINDOLA, Manuel. Merchants of the South Sea on the Manila Route: Companies and Projects in the Late Colonial Period. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2019, vol.18, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.

The article analyzes the characteristics of chilean commerce in relation to the global circuits of colonial commerce, focusing on the projection that this space had in the Pacific and, particularly, in relation to trade with New Spain and the Philippines. To do this, we review the structural trends that explain these processes during the 18th century, analyzing the consequences and the reception that these topics had among the merchants, bureaucrats and local governors. Finally, we stop in the relational and micro historical orbit of those protagonists, through the study of a proposal to create a commercial company between Chile, California and the Philippines, analyzing their intertwining and vicissitudes, as another way of understanding the operation of those mercantile systems.

Palabras clave : Colonial trade; Smuggling; Bourbon reforms; Spanish Pacific.
