The so-called "biotechnology debate" has been in progress now for well over three decades. Both proponents and opponents of this technology express arguments aimed to persuade the public about its benefits or risks. The present article reviews the results of various surveys conducted in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region to determine the consumers' perception of biotechnology. This revision allows drawing a profile of the public's opinions about this matter, and it is suggested that proponents and opponents of biotechnology could be leaving public's interests and concerns out of the debate.
